Medical Certificates Explained: Class 1 or Class 2?
Why Do Pilots Need Medical Certificates?
Class 2 Medical: For Private Pilots
Class 2 Medical Requirements
The Class 2 medical examination includes assessment of cardiovascular health, respiratory function, neurological status, vision and hearing, mental health, and general physical condition. You will also provide a detailed medical history and undergo various tests depending on your age and individual circumstances.

Class 1 Medical: For Commercial Pilots
Career Consideration
If you are planning a professional flying career, we strongly recommend obtaining your Class 1 medical before starting expensive CPL training. Discovering a disqualifying condition after investing tens of thousands of pounds in training can be devastating. Getting your medical first provides peace of mind and allows early identification of any issues that might need addressing.

LAPL Medical: A Lighter Alternative
LAPL Limitations
The LAPL medical is only valid for exercising LAPL privileges, which include restrictions such as flying only single-engine aircraft below certain weights, carrying a maximum of three passengers, and flying only in visual conditions. If you later upgrade to a PPL, you will need to obtain at least a Class 2 medical.

Early Disclosure
Always disclose all medical conditions, medications, and treatments to your AME. Attempting to conceal information is not only dangerous but can result in certificate revocation and potential prosecution. Many conditions that seem concerning are actually compatible with flying when properly managed and declared.

Special Issuance
"I was diagnosed with a heart condition that I thought would end my flying career. After working with specialists and the CAA, I received a special issuance certificate with additional monitoring requirements. Three years on, I am still flying and grateful for a system that found a way forward rather than simply saying no." - Commercial Helicopter Pilot
