HelicopterPilotTraining
HQ Aviation trains helicopter pilots at Denham Aerodrome, 30 minutes from central London, from a first trial lesson to a full PPL(H), type ratings, night rating and CPL(H), flying one of the UK's largest Robinson fleets. Founded by Captain Quentin “Q” Smith, twice Helicopter Aerobatics World Champion.
From First Flight Onwards
Not a flight school. A clubhouse.
Closest to central London
Denham is around 30 minutes from town, so you actually fly, instead of spending your lesson budget on the motorway.
30+ Robinson fleet
One of the UK's largest Robinson fleets, R22, R44 and R66, means an aircraft is ready when you are, and your training never stalls waiting for one.
Maintained where you fly
Our own CAA Part-145 Robinson service centre keeps the fleet in-house, so the engineers who maintain your aircraft work in the next hangar.
Instructors with real stories
Staffed by instructors who fly for the love of it: expedition pilots, examiners and a twice World Champion founder.

Helicopter training FAQs
For a Private Pilot Licence PPL(H), most students typically qualify in around 55–70 flying hours. Flying twice a week, that typically means a few months; once a week, closer to a year. The licence minimum is 45 hours.
It depends on the aircraft you train in (R22, R44 or R66) and how many hours you need. Most people start with a trial lesson to see how it feels before committing. Contact us for current 2026 rates and a realistic budget for your situation.
A CAA Class 2 medical certificate is the standard requirement for a PPL(H). Commercial pilots need a Class 1. Most people pass without difficulty, and we can point you to a local aeromedical examiner before you commit to training.
You can start lessons at any age. You must be 16 to fly solo and 17 to hold a PPL(H). Younger students bank their hours until then.
Both are excellent trainers. The two-seat R22 is the classic, most economical choice; the four-seat R44 offers more space and stability, and suits larger pilots or those planning to own one. We fly both, so try each and see.

Your licence is the beginning, not the end. Most of our students keep flying with us, hiring the same R22s, R44s and R66s they trained in through self-fly hire, building hours towards a CPL(H), or stepping up to a Robinson of their own with the sales and maintenance teams in the same hangar. Have a look at the fleet you'll be flying.

Come and take the controls.
Every pilot here started with one flight. Book a trial lesson at Denham, or give one as a voucher, and log your first hour.
