Your Experience

What To Expect

A trial lesson, often called a discovery flight, is a real, hands-on helicopter flying lesson. After a briefing with your instructor you'll take the controls of a Robinson R22, R44 or turbine R66 and fly over the Buckinghamshire countryside from Denham Aerodrome, around 30 minutes from central London, and an easy trip from Gerrards Cross, Beaconsfield, Harrow and Uxbridge. It works as a one-off experience or a gift, and vouchers are available above.

If you catch the bug, a trial lesson is exactly how most of our PPL(H) student pilots started. See the full route from first flight to licence on our training hub, or ask your instructor on the day.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked

01

Do I need any prior experience?+

No prior experience is required. Our instructors will guide you through everything from the pre-flight briefing to hands-on flying. Discovery flights are designed for complete beginners.

02

Can I bring passengers?+

Yes! Depending on the helicopter type and weights, you may be able to bring 1–2 passengers. Let us know when booking so we can arrange the appropriate aircraft.

03

What happens if the weather is bad?+

Safety is our priority. If weather conditions are unsuitable, we'll reschedule at no extra cost. We monitor conditions closely and give as much notice as possible.

04

Does this count towards my pilot's licence?+

Yes! Hours flown during your discovery flight count towards PPL(H) training. We'll log everything properly if you decide to continue with us.

05

Is this suitable as a gift?+

Absolutely! Discovery flights make unforgettable gifts. We offer vouchers valid for 12 months, giving flexibility to book at their convenience.

06

What will I actually do during the flight?+

After a pre-flight briefing your instructor will demonstrate basic controls, then hand them over to you. You will fly straight and level, gentle turns, and may even hover briefly, all under close supervision.

07

How long is the discovery flight?+

Discovery flights are available in 30-minute or 60-minute formats. We recommend 60 minutes for a fuller experience, including time over the London skyline and surrounding countryside.

08

Can I get a certificate or logbook entry?+

Yes. All hours count towards a future PPL(H), and we provide a logbook entry signed by the instructor. A commemorative certificate is also available on request.

09

What should I wear?+

Comfortable clothing and flat shoes are ideal. Avoid loose scarves or open footwear. Smart-casual is perfectly appropriate, there is no need for specialist gear.

10

Is there an age or weight limit?+

There is no minimum age, young children must be seated safely and weighed in advance. Weight limits apply per aircraft type and are assessed at booking. Contact us if you have specific requirements.

11

What if I feel unwell or nervous during the flight?+

Tell your instructor immediately, they are trained to handle this and will prioritise your comfort. Most nerves pass quickly once you have the controls. You are always in safe hands.

12

Where exactly does the flight depart from?+

All discovery flights depart from Hangar E, Denham Aerodrome, Uxbridge, UB9 5DF. Free parking is available on site. We are approximately 20 minutes from Central London via the M40.
